There was a time when spying was all about the spy agents rather than what they used to get the job done. Back in the day the spy gadgets that the agents carried were advanced for the time, but in comparison to what is currently available, they can definitely be retired to the spy museum. In those times, spy gadgets were mere accessories. Undercover agents carried such things as micro cassette recorders and very compact cameras that had to be cleverly concealed in say a hollowed-out book. Spies wrote letters that contained microdots to pass information without detection and special stealth trade craft had to be learned and adopted by agents in-the-field
These days spying seems to be about what technology the agents carry or have access to. Watch an episode of Spooks and you will have agents carrying all manner of spy gadgets including tracking and listening devices for easy deployment in all manner of situations. So, OK, these spy gadgets may be a little far fetched in some respects, but in reality the principle is the same. Today's spies have got a comprehensive array of tiny spy devices to hand and without them, they probably would not be able to get the job done so effectively
Of course, the agents themselves still have to employ certain trade craft skills, but also must be technically savvy to use the spy gadgets that can be used in almost any situation. Imagine how easy it is these days to get some covert video footage using a pen camera or a spy camera concealed in a car key fob. Self-contained video recording solutions like this used to be a pipe dream. An these days digital technology has meant that recording voice evidence is made so simple with tiny, but powerful digital recording modules being small enough to incorporate into everyday items
So, will this type of equipment really make the spy agents redundant. Probably not, but one thing is for sure, the latest spy gadgets certainly have them running a little scared
